U.S.A.
La Crosse sits on the Mississippi River on the border between Wisconsin and
Minnesota, surrounded by majestic and scenic bluffs. The area around La Crosse
was largely spared from glaciation during the last ice age, leading to this
unique-for-the-area geology. The Mississippi provides a large source of recreation
for the city, including river cruises on replica paddle wheel and steam boats.
Winter brings another set of activities, including over 650 miles of groomed
snowmobile trails, and skiing on nearby Mt. La Crosse. Agriculture is important
to the area, and numerous cranberry farms dot the countryside. It is also an
area of Amish settlement, and tours of these farm communties, which still use
horse and buggy as a means of transportation, provide a look back to a simpler
time.
